SUPREME WRAPPING FILM
Benchmark Report
Avery Dennison has conducted benchmark tests of seven vehicle wrapping film products currently produced by major manufacturers worldwide. The tests were conducted by three independent applicators at three different skill levels, and with the support of an independent wrap shop.
The Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping Film benchmarking video is a simulation of these benchmark tests, and includes results from the real-life trials.
PRODUCTS TESTED
The following gloss products were tested:
> Avery Dennison® Supreme Wrapping Film
> 3M® 1080 Series Scotchprint
> Hexis® HX20000 Cast Vinyl
> Arlon® 2600 Ultimate Premium Plus
> Orafol® ORACAL 970RA Premium
> Grafityp® GrafiWrap SC900
> MACtac® 700BF Sublime
TEST METHODOLOGY AND CONDITIONS
A range of different product characteristics were assessed to arrive at a reliable competitive benchmark. All of the following were analysed:
> Slideability
the ability to slide material over a surface without immediately sticking it to the surface
> Repositionability
ease of repositioning a film after it has been incorrectly applied
> Air egress
technology that allows faster positioning and application without air-bubbles
> Conformability
the ease with which a material can be wrapped around a non-flat surface
> Application speed
the speed with which a wrapping film can be applied on the given type of surface
> Removal speed
the speed with which the wrapping film can be removed on the given type of surface
> Finish quality
the visual quality of the material after it has been applied
Applicators were given clear instructions and pre-cut samples to ensure consistency of size and weight.
A large industrial hall was used, with applicators working in separate areas to avoid communication. An independent coordinator was always present to support the sequence of activities, and pictures were taken and filed of all activities in the testing area during the testing period.
Three independent applicators with different skill levels were assigned to test the films. They were clearly briefed that products were on test, rather than their own skills. Tests used differently shaped surfaces, including corrugations (and six vehicles/two different models). Tools available included the Avery Dennison tool belt plus content; Avery Dennison Surface Cleaner; and Avery Dennison Adhesive Remover.
The benchmark was divided into two sections:
perception of the products, and actual measurement of application performance.
PERCEPTION OF PRODUCTS
The perception test started with a ‘touch and feel’ exercise, allowing application on a substrate. Slideability, repositionability, air egress and quality of final application were all then tested in sequence. After perception and application tests, applicators were asked to give their final impressions, taking all experienced characteristics of the product into account.
APPLICATION PERFORMANCE
A code system was set up to properly guide the test procedures without using brand names, to avoid preconceptions from applicators. The following factors were measured: application , conformability,
and removability.
